Police statement on why M1 near Leeds was closed for three hours

West Yorkshire Police have released a statement on why the M1 near Leeds was completely closed for three hours this morning.

Officers were called at 3.48am today, Thursday, after a number of reports that a woman was at the wrong side of the railings on a bridge on the A61 over the M1.

Police closed both directions of the M1 between junction 43 for Leeds and junction 44 for Rothwell while the incident was dealt with.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and were diverted around the closure.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 3.48am today (11/2) police received a number of calls about a woman on the wrong side of railings on a bridge on the A61 over the M1 near to junction 44.

"Officers attended and both carriageways were closed.

"The woman was brought to safety at 6am and the incident concluded."

Both carriageways of the motorway are now back open and traffic is coping well.
