Police statement on Harehills chaos as 'fireworks launched at cops' after 'feral kids' at house party terrorise neighbours

West Yorkshire Police (WYP) have vowed to step up patrols in a Harehills estate after 'feral' partygoers 'launched fireworks at officers'.

The disorder happened late at night on Saturday, October 9, in Darfield Avenue and involved dozens of youths who were at a house party in the street.

WYP said officers were called to the area after receiving "a number of calls from residents reporting anti-social behaviour".

The gathering was shut down by officers in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but trouble soon spread to other streets in the area.

Residents documented the chaos that ensued via social media on Saturday night, with one commenting in a community group: "It was a house party full of kids and it got shut down . Then they shot fireworks at police."

"Could see some innocent people running down getting out the way. But could hear all the feral f*****s causing havoc," said another.

Now, WYP has confirmed fireworks were set off in the street - but it did not say whether they were launched in the direction of officers.

A spokesman for the force said: "On Saturday night, police received a number of calls from residents reporting anti-social behaviour involving a large number of youths congregating around a party at an address in Darfield Avenue, Harehills.

"Officers attended and the address was closed down. There were further reports of anti-social behaviour in the surrounding streets, including fireworks being set off, and officers attended to disperse those involved.

"Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team will be increasing their patrols of the area to reassure residents and deter any further incidents."
