Police statement as staff held at knifepoint at Gipton Tesco Express in Leeds

A robber held staff at knifepoint before stealing cash and cigarettes from a Tesco Express in Leeds during the early hours of Monday morning, police have confirmed.

West Yorkshire Police were called to Tesco Express in Easterly Road, Gipton, at 5.52am today.

The force said a man, who was armed with a knife, had threatened staff before making off with cash and cigarettes.

A cordon remains in place at the store today to allow for forensic examination while enquiries continue to trace the man responsible.

It comes after the same store was targeted by three armed robbers at 6.20am on Friday, December 3.

A 40-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman have been charged in relation to Friday's incident and are due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court today.

Police are now appealing for information after today's armed robbery and are asking anyone who saw what happened to call Leeds District CID on 101, quoting crime reference 13210628908.

Information can be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
