Police statement as man 'attacked' on A61 in Leeds after being 'sprayed in leg with unknown substance'

A major Leeds road was blocked off by police, firefighters and paramedics this afternoon after a man was attacked and "sprayed in the leg".

A huge emergency services presence was seen on the A61 just across the river from Clarence Dock and near the junction with the A63 sometime after 2pm on Tuesday, June 8.

At least two fire engines, an ambulance and several police vehicles were stationed at the side of the road with the response causing a great deal of concern for passers-by.

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed the nature of the incident and said its officers are continuing enquiries after a man was taken to hospital with injuries after being assaulted.

The force says the man was "sprayed in the leg with an unknown substance".

A spokesman for police said: "At 2.22pm today, police were called to A61, Cross Green, following reports of an assault.

"Officers attended and found a man had been assaulted. He had been sprayed in the leg with an unknown substance.

"The man was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening. Enquiries are ongoing."
