Police statement as '100 hand grenades' found in Mansfield woodland

Bomb disposal experts were called after reports a large amount of hand grenades had been discovered in Mansfield woodland.

Reports of the find in Clipstone Drive, Forest Town, were initially made to officers mid-morning on Bank Holiday Monday, May 31.

Expert engineers were then contacted who carried out a controlled explosion later the same day.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "A controlled explosion has been carried out Monday, May 31, after a report of about 100 hand grenades found in woods in Forest Town.

"Police were made aware of the discovery, off Clipstone Drive, at around 11.45am.

"As a precaution, Nottinghamshire Police requested the assistance of the Joint Services Explosive Ordinance Disposal Engineers.

"Bomb disposal experts carried out a successful controlled explosion at around 5pm. No evacuations were necessary due to the rural location."
