Police spent two days searching in Long Eaton for dad who was found dead near canal

An inquest into the death of a dad who was found dead in Long Eaton has been opened and adjourned.

Robert Andrew Chatwin was found dead in marshland near the Erewash Canal, on what is known locally as Dockholm canal path, on Monday, April 8, shortly after 2am.

He was discovered by Derbyshire police officers two days after being reported missing.

The footpath runs between the River Erewash and the Erewash Canal.

The inquest was opened on Friday, April 12.

A postmortem examination was carried out on Tuesday, April 9. Mr Chatwin's cause of death is yet to be confirmed, reports Derbyshire Live.

Mr Chatwin, who lived in Regent Street, Long Eaton, was identified by his former partner, Kelly Riley, at the Royal Derby Hospital  mortuary on Wednesday, April 10.

It was confirmed that Mr Chatwin, who was single, previously had two children with Ms Riley, who reported him missing.

The hearing was told Mr Chatwin was born in Birmingham on March 16, 1982, and had previously worked as a labourer, but he had not  worked for some time.

Assistant coroner Louise Pinder who opened the inquest at Derby Coroners' Court adjourned the case until Thursday, May 9.

A review of the police investigation into Mr Chatwin's death will be held on this date.
