Police slated for 'unnecessary' use of Taser on assault suspect

The use of a police Taser on a suspect wasn’t reasonable or necessary, a watchdog has ruled.

The incident happened when police went to arrest a man in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, in September following an assault.

A report by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner Kate Frame said when he gave chase and became aggressive, an officer tasered him.

The PIRC report said the man did not appear to be posing a threat to officers at the time and using a Taser was unnecessary.

Calum Steele, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, said: “The officers resolved this incident without anyone involved being injured. They are a credit to the communities they serve.”
