Traffic cops say they will not "tolerate our roads being used as racetracks" after catching Audi and Golf GTI drivers speeding down the M58 near Bootle at an alleged 126mph.
North West Motorway Police tracked the racing drivers and clocked speeds over and above 126mph. The Golf GTI owner had already received a police warning for anti-social driving, police said.
Both drivers have been summonsed to appear before magistrates and could face lengthy bans and hefty fines.
North West Motorway Police tweeted: "Following reports of vehicles being driven in an anti social manner in the Bootle area our Motorway Patrols covered the M58 and sighted this Golf GTI and an Audi S1 racing.
"With the police vehicle behind them both of them were paced at an average of 126mph.
"The Golf GTI already had a Section 59 Warning and was recovered.
"The driver of the AUDI S1 received a warning for his behaviour and both were reported for summons for excess speed. We will not tolerate our roads being used as racetracks."
