Police slam drivers for 'dangerous parking' as dozens descend on Leeds beauty spots for exercise

Police have hit out against “inconsiderate and dangerous” parking as people drive to exercise at a beauty spots in Leeds.

West Yorkshire Police Leeds North East team shared on their Facebook page they had received complaints regarding the parking on Wilke Lane, Harewood and around the Harewood estate.

They also shared a picture with a long stretch of cars lining along one side of the road while others are forced to drive in the second lane.

They said: “We've had complaints of inconsiderate and dangerous parking on Wike Lane, Harewood and around the Harewood Estate. We understand in these difficult times exercise is important but we would ask for considerate parking, please. We have issued tickets and will be patrolling the area”

West Yorkshire Police Leeds East team yesterday (Monday) received similar parking complaints as people headed to St Aidan’s Nature Reserve in Allerton Bywater.

They said: “Whilst we encourage people to continue to use local green spaces for exercise / their own well-being during the current lockdown but to ensure that if travelling a short distance to get there that they should park in a safe and legal manner.

“We have had several complaints around the entrance to St Aiden's nature reserve in Allerton Bywater regarding the parking.

"We will be continuing to monitor the situation as it has clearly been busy down there this weekend.

“There is a layby which is ok to park in but there have been a few cars blocking the entrance to Queen Street/Astley Lane and parking around the junction with Wood Lane

“It is a fast road and members of the public should not have to be walking on the road to get past cars.”

In the comments under the post about cars parked in Harewood, members of the public condemned drivers for flocking to the beauty spot for exercise.

One user said: "I’ve twice given up walking at Harewood when I couldn’t find anywhere to park," with another labelling the road a "nightmare".

Another person wrote: "Disgusting behaviour! No need. None of these cars are local because anyone local would have walked there.

"This is why we are in a lockdown in the first place yet these people would be the first to complain at the restrictions becoming tighter."

Someone else commented: "Why do they have to take their cars to exercise? Walk around their own area. Sir Tom walked round his garden.

"Exercise doesn't have to be done in parks etc. Tow the lot away and fine them heavily. Money could go to the NHS...."
