Police shut down search for missing fishermen in Moreton Bay

The fishermen were in this aluminium boat, which was found partly submerged the day after they went missing.

Police have concluded their search for two men missing in Moreton Bay since they failed to return from a fishing trip last Saturday night.

Despite days of searching by air and sea, Carwyn Massey, 25, and Timothy Maher, 31, have not been found.

The Queensland Police Service issued a statement on Friday evening confirming the search had been wound up.

"Police have liaised closely with the families of both men and discussed the sad news regarding the likelihood of survival," the statement said.

"The families have asked if their privacy could be respected at this time.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the men at this very difficult time."

The pair's 3.3-metre aluminium boat was found near Green Island last Sunday afternoon.

Police said it was mostly submerged, with just a small part of the bow sticking out of the water.

The boat had been launched from White Island on Saturday.

Up two 20 vessels joined the search this week, along with SES volunteers who searched Green Island and St Helena Island.

The last contact with the men was via mobile phone at 10:15pm that night.

Authorities said strong westerly winds blowing at the time on Moreton Bay meant conditions were not favourable for such a small boat.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner and asked anyone with further information to contact them.
