Police shut down 'rave with DJ' at park after 70 people flout lockdown rules

Police have shut down a "rave" at a park after about 70 people flouted lockdown rules to gather for the party.

West Mercia Police said a DJ had set up for the gathering at Granville Country Park in Telford, Shropshire, on Saturday.

The party appeared to have been organised in advance, with a sound system set up in the park, despite gatherings of more than two people are still not allowed under coronavirus restrictions.

Police dispersed the group from the park at about 8.15pm yesterday, a police spokesman told Birmingham Live.

A member of the group reportedly told police they were "sick of self-isolation".

Telford Cops tweeted: "We have worked so hard and sacrificed so much and this group decide it doesn't apply.

"I'm shocked that people would care so little."

Public gatherings of more than two people who are not from the same household are restricted as part of the Government's emergency legislation, unless they are essential for work purposes, for a funeral, for a house move or to provide help to vulnerable people.

More than 14,000 fines have been issued to people flouting the coronavirus lockdown rules, according to the National Police Chiefs' Council.

The figures, from 27 March to 11 May, show the most fixed penalty notices - 906 - were handed out in London, by the Metropolitan Police.

National Police Chiefs' Council chairman Martin Hewitt said: "The vast majority of people continue to do the right thing, which protects the NHS and helps save lives.

"The figures show our approach is proportionate, with just 0.02% of the population in England and Wales being issued with a fine."
