Police shot during drug raid in Bangkok

Monthian Panrokha, 36, is arrested after allegedly firing shots and wounding two policemen during a drugs raid in Bangkok on Monday.

Two policemen were shot and wounded during a raid on a house in Bangkok's Kannayao district early on Monday morning. One suspect was arrested and 5,000 speed pills and 200 grams of crystal methamphetamine were seized, police said.

Pol Cpl Suthep Boonyuen, 32, was shot in his left arm and elbow and Pol Cpl Sarawut Nakphan, 30, in the abdomen.

The shots were fired during a scuffle before one of the suspects was subdued.

The man, identified as Monthian Panrokha, 36, was detained. Police said he had a .38 pistol in his possession. An accomplice identified only as Tun fled during the scuffle.

Police searched the premises and found 5,000 methamphetamine pills, 200 grams of crystal meth or "ice," a homemade gun hidden in a speaker and drug-use paraphernalia. A motorcycle was also seized as evidence.

Mr Monthian allegedly told police that he had dropped by the house to buy 200 speed pills and 40 grams of ice from Mr Tun for further distribution.

The suspect said he mistook the police for rival dealers who had followed him to the house.

The injured officers were taken to hospital and are recovering from their injuries, police said.
