A man was shot by police outside Dallas Love Field airport on Friday after threatening a woman and an officer during an apparent domestic dispute, police said.
The man was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition, Randall Blankenbaker, an assistant Dallas police chief, told reporters at a news conference at the airport.
At around noon, Blankenbaker said, the suspect was throwing rocks and threatening a woman in a car parked at an exit near baggage claim at the airport, which is about six miles from downtown Dallas and far smaller than the region’s primary airport, Dallas-Fort Worth International.
After behaving aggressively towards an officer and failing to obey commands, the spokesman said, “the individual came toward [the officer] again and so he discharged his weapon a number of times”.
Police said the suspect was the father of the woman’s children and that the rocks damaged the car.
A witness, Bryan Armstrong, posted footage of the incident on Instagram. In the video, multiple gunshots, screams and cries of “get down, get down” and “stay down” are audible.
Television pictures showed long lines as passengers waited to re-enter security checkpoints. Blankenbaker said all passengers were having to be re-screened because when they heard the gunshots, some were startled and rushed through the screening area without being checked.
The airport said on Twitter that the incident had caused a three-hour delay in getting through security.
The shooting was the second violent incident near a Dallas airport in as many days. A 42-year-old man died after an apparent robbery and kidnapping that began on Thursday afternoon at a gas station close to the DFW airport rental car centre, WFAA reported.
