A man has been shot and wounded by police after he allegedly assaulted an officer during a response to a family violence incident.

West Australian police were called to a home in Dumbleyung in the state's wheatbelt region around 12:30am on Saturday where they separated a man in his 30s and a woman.

The pair are believed to have been involved in a family violence altercation.

A male officer was physically assaulted while conducting inquiries, WA Police say, and the man was shot.

The wounds are non-fatal and he was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment while the male officer was taken to Narrogin Hospital for treatment of  a laceration to his head.

Inquiries are continuing, with charges yet to be laid.
