Police have shared an image of a “seized” electric scooter on the back of a tow truck as a reminder they are not legal on roads.

The Met Cycle Police posted pictures on Twitter of two scooters - one strapped to the back of a tow truck and another, equipped with a phone holder, bell and helmet, on the side of the road.

“Please be aware that Mechanically Propelled Scooters are illegal and can’t be used on roads,” the post said.

“If you know someone that uses one, let them know. If stopped, riders face the possibility of it being seized, having points on their licence and/or being fined.”

It follows a recent crackdown on electric scooters in a bid to improve road safety.

Adult e-scooters, which travel at up to 20mph, are only permitted on private land.

Using them on the road commits the same offence of using a motor vehicle with no insurance, and risks a £300 fixed penalty notice and six points on a driving licence.
