78yo lost for hours in cold Canberra temperatures dressed only in shorts and T-shirt found safe

Emergency services have located a 78-year-old man who became lost while on a walk in bushland in Canberra's north late on Wednesday.

Ramsey Howard had become disoriented while walking in the Mount Ainslie region and had last been seen about 2:00pm.

He made an emergency call for help but was unable to provide his location, ACT Policing said.

Police made an urgent plea for the public's assistance in locating Mr Howard, who was wearing only a T-shirt and shorts when he set off.

The temperature in Canberra had dropped to 7 degrees Celsius by 7:30pm, with a further low of 1C predicted overnight on Wednesday.

More than 50 State Emergency Services personnel joined police to help in the search effort from the entrance to the reserve in Ainslie.

At about 8:30pm they said he had been found "safe and well".

The reserve is dark, steep and thickly overgrown in some places, and is a popular destination for bushwalkers.
