Police sergeant caught drink driving is 'dismissed' from force

A sergeant has been "formally dismissed" from Merseyside Police after drink driving during lockdown.

The officer was found to have breached professional standards to the extent that it was gross misconduct.

He had resigned from the force in October.

Ward, who was based at Birkenhead police station, admitted drink driving in relation to an incident on June 29 of last year.

As a result, he was fined and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Ward, whose collar number was 3279, faced an accelerated Merseyside Police misconduct hearing on Monday.

He was found to have "breached standards of professional behaviour in relation to fitness for work and discreditable conduct which amounted to gross misconduct".

While he had resigned in October, the disciplinary panel formally dismissed him yesterday.

Detective Superintendent Cheryl Rhodes, from the force’s Professional Standards Department, said: "We demand the highest possible standards from all our officers and staff.

"The public quite rightly have high expectations of our officers and Merseyside Police is committed to ensuring we meet those expectations.

"When we receive information about those alleged to have fallen below those standards, we will always thoroughly investigate to ensure the public can continue to have the utmost confidence in the force."

The hearing of Ward, whose full name was not released by the force, was the second to have taken place this month.

In the other case Alex Edwards, a former special constable, was found to have breached professional standards by accessing confidential information "for his own curiosity".

The force said he would have been dismissed had he still been serving. He was added to the College of Policing Barred List.
