Police send tourists home after dawn raids on campervans

Police have this morning been banging on the doors of campervans and caravans and sending people home.

Officers say they have identified a number of groups who stayed overnight in Cornwall last night against the advice of Public Health England - and current lockdown regulations.

The campers were given an early morning wake up call, and told to go back where they'd came from, reports CornwallLive.

Police tweeted pictures of some of the vans they had been calling on just after 6am this morning.

On Twitter at 6.18am, police in Newquay tweeted: "We identified some visitors that had travelled to Newquay and stayed overnight against Public Health England advice and legislation.

"With engagement, explanation and education they moved on. We love visitors to the town, # comebacklater ."

Yesterday police fined a driver who had travelled from London to Cornwall for a trip and over the weekend traffic wardens ran out of tickets they were dealing with so many tourists in North Devon.

Roads across Devon and Cornwall were 'as busy as August' this weekend, according to local authorities.

Some routes at popular tourist locations were left gridlocked.

Breaking lockdown rules can now risk a £100 fine - rising to more than £3,000 for repeat offenders.
