Police seize 'lots of alcohol from youths' as hundreds flock to Barry Island to soak up the sunshine

South Wales Police said "lots of alcohol was seized from youths" amid all the chaos at Barry Island today (July 31).

It follows extremely busy scenes in the area on Friday as hundreds packed the beach and surrounding roads.

Routes in were gridlocked and trains were also described as being "heaving" as people travelled to the area to enjoy the good weather.

Throughout the day, cars could be seen queuing for up to three miles waiting to get to Barry Island as temperatures reached up to 27°C in some parts of Wales on Friday.

Train users also said that rail services were heaving and Transport for Wales put out an urgent plea asking people only to use trains for essential travel.

It comes a day after police said  20-25,000 people visited the beach  at Barry Island in one day.

Now it appears the police have had a lot to deal with following the sun rush, including dealing with young people drinking and finding children who had been separated from their parents.

South Wales Police posted the following notice on its Vale of Glamorgan Twitter page: "A very busy Barry Island today.

"Barry officers have dealt with many incidents, involving six missing children, that were reunited with their families.

"Also lots of alcohol seized from youths drinking within the PSPO area."

Various pictures emerged throughout the day of the beaches being full of people, cars queuing for miles and people queuing at train stations in the hope of making it to the area to soak up the sunshine before the day was out.

Other beaches such as Ogmore-by-Sea and areas in North Wales are also reported to have been busy.
