Police seize large haul of weapons after stopping convoy of vehicles - fifteen men have been arrested

Police have seized a large haul of weapons after they stopped a convoy of vehicles.

Armed police swooped on a number of vehicles travelling on the A556 near Knutsford on Thursday morning (August 20).

Fifteen men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit section 18 assaults, following a planned operation led by Cheshire Police.

They all remain in police custody for questioning.

Officers uncovered a 'large quantity' of weapons in the vehicles, which have since been seized.

The A556 was closed southbound between the M56 junction 8 and the M6 junction 19 for a number of hours, while police responded to the incident.

Footage from the scene shows a number of marked and unmarked police cars parked at the side of the road.

A number of armed police officers could also been seen.

At least a dozen vehicles appeared to have been pulled over by police.

Superintendent Julie Westgate said: "The prevention of disorder and the safety of residents was our priority in what was a large scale operation.

"I’d like to thank the officers who attended the A556 and Sandbach for their professionalism and determination to keep everyone safe and deter disorder.

"I hope this reassures residents who may have been alarmed by the large police presence.

"Local officers remain in the Sandbach area to provide reassurance and engage with residents."

"The investigation is continuing and those arrested remain in police custody at this current time."
