Police seize huge machete from man walking through Liverpool city centre park

Police have arrested a man after he was spotted wielding a machete in a Liverpool city centre park.

Merseyside Police said they were "surprised" to see the man walking through the park holding the enormous blade, and quickly took action to seize the weapon and place him under arrest.

The man was detained without incident, police said.

An image shared by police shows a large black knife with a serrated edge. The blade appears to be significantly longer than 30cm in length.

Under current UK law, it is an offence to carry any sharp or bladed instrument in a public place, with the exception of a folding pocket knife where the cutting edge of the blade is 7.62 cm (3 inches) or less.

Merseyside Police tweeted about the arrest at 12:34 on Monday (November 1), writing: "City Centre Neighbourhood Officers on foot patrol during the hours of darkness in the L3 area have come across a male walking through a park holding a machete.

"All surprised as each other. Male placed machete on ground when challenged.

"Duly arrested without incident."
