Police seize four cars in one night from uninsured drivers

Northumbria Police have warned the region's motorists to ensure they are driving with up-to-date insurance - after they seized four vehicles in one night.

Officers from the force's Road Safety division seized vehicles in Newcastle, Sunderland, Washington and Bedlington on Monday, after the drivers failed to show they had appropriate insurance in place.

Posting to Twitter in the early hours of Tuesday, Northumbria Police said: "Insurance is not optional and we have heard all the excuses before. A busy night with cars seized in Newcastle, Sunderland Washington and Bedlington."

According to gov.uk, uninsured drivers could face a fixed penalty of £300 and six penalty points. If an offender goes to court, they could receive an unlimited fine and ultimately a driving ban.

It adds: "The police also have the power to seize, and in some cases, destroy the vehicle that’s being driven uninsured."
