Police seize cash and cannabis following suspected Ponteland drug deal

Police found £1,800 and two ounces of cannabis in a Newcastle area within six minutes of receiving a call about a suspected drug deal.

At 12.24pm on Tuesday, officers were contacted by a passer-by who told them about a man acting suspiciously in the car park of Ponteland Leisure Centre.

The concerned caller claimed a suspected drug deal was being done in broad daylight between the driver of a Vauxhall Corsa and a man on a bike.

Within minutes, police were sent to the area and managed to stop a man inside a vehicle who matched the description given by the caller.

The car and driver were then searched and multiple bags of cannabis – stashed inside wrappers - were seized.

Officers also searched an address in Newcastle and found two ounces of cannabis and nearly £2,000 in cash. The items were seized and an investigation is ongoing.

Sgt Ian Pattison, of Northumbria Police, said: "A member of the public was out walking close to their home when they saw something that did not look right, and contacted police.

"In doing so, that enabled officers to quickly arrive at the scene and detain a suspect.

"I would like to take this opportunity to praise the resident who got in touch, and we would always encourage people to contact us if they see something suspicious in their community.”

A 19-year-old man is due to be interviewed in connection with the investigation.
