Police seize around 1,000 cannabis plants growing in derelict warehouse

Around 1,000 cannabis plants have been seized by police investigating a derelict warehouse.

Officers attended Quibells Lane in Newark at around 10am on Tuesday morning (October 27) after reports of "suspicious activity" in the area.

A quick of search of the building revealed a "complex network of modifications" to rooms where hundreds of cannabis plants could be grown.

One room had been turned into a living space and police are now working to investigate the circumstances of the crop.

Sergeant Robert Harrison, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Drugs and drug-related crime have a devastating impact on our communities.

“We will not tolerate cannabis grows and as a force we are committed to tackling drug crime in all its forms.

“The recovery of an estimated 1,000 plants is substantial and we are pleased to have recovered so many. This will undoubtedly have had a detrimental impact on organised criminal activity in the area.

"Work is now underway to investigate the circumstances of the find.

“No one has been arrested in connection with the grow as of yet but it is still very early in our enquiries.

“The production of cannabis on this scale is an incredibly serious offence that is often linked to organised criminal gangs and associated with related offences from serious violence to people trafficking.

“To anyone else who thinks it’s okay to break the law in this way I’d also like to give a clear warning. We won’t tolerate your activities. We could well be watching you an already, and we would be paying you a visit sooner than you think.”
