Police seize £20k cash, drugs and make eight arrests as dawn raids are launched in Bury, Ashton and Heywood

Police swooped to make eight arrests in dawn raids today launched to combat drug dealing.

Warrants were executed under Operation Heart at 14 addresses in Bury, Ashton-under-Lyne, Heywood and in Doncaster, south Yorkshire.

Several kilograms of drugs and more than £20,000 in cash was seized during the operation.

Police chiefs praised detectives and officers for their investigations into what they called 'a sophisticated and audacious group of offenders'.

Two women, aged 41 and 44, and six men aged between 19 and 59 were arrested on suspicion of drug supply-related offences.

All eight remained in custody on Wednesday and are due to be questioned.

A break-down of where the raids were carried out hasn't been provided by Greater Manchester Police.

No further description of the drugs seized has also been given.

GMP detectives said that so far, controlled drugs worth more than £2m, more than £30,000 in cash and a gun have been seized under Operation Heart, launched to investigate the supply of Class A and B drugs.

A force spokesman said: "Following today's action two women, aged 41 and 44, and six men, aged 19, 30, 31, 39, 52 and 59, have been arrested on suspicion of a number of drug supply-related offences.

"They all remain in custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Lee Griffin said: "At present we have people in custody as part of an ongoing investigation into the organised distribution of controlled drugs.

"To date, this operation has recovered over £2 million worth of controlled drugs, over £300,000 in cash and an illegally held firearm.

"I would like to thank the teams here in Manchester and the south Yorkshire teams in Doncaster, under Operation Fortify, who have worked tirelessly in order to bring a sophisticated and audacious group of offenders to the attention of the criminal justice system.

"The supply of illegal drugs blights communities and destroys people's livelihoods.

"I hope that today's action demonstrates to the local community that we continue to do all we can to target those who profit from other’s vulnerabilities."

Seven of the 14 warrants were executed in New Rossington, Woodlands and Balby, in Doncaster, leading to six of the arrests.

Sergeant Matt Cowling, from South Yorkshire Police, said the warrants in Greater Manchester were executed simultaneously.

The drugs and cash were seized in the Doncaster raids.

"Keeping residents safe and identifying those involved in this type of criminality is our absolute priority," he said.

"Those involved in organised crime often prey on vulnerable communities and can leave residents living in fear. This is why we will continue to be relentless in identifying and pursuing those involved."
