Police seize $1.6m from 'suitcases in hire car'

Police say the money was found in two suitcases.

Police have seized $1.6 million in cash allegedly found in two suitcases in a hire car stopped by officers in Perth's CBD.

WA Police, including officers from the WA Proceeds of Crime Meth Money Team, and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission stopped the car on Tuesday night and charged two Victorian men.

A 29-year-old man from Carnegie and a 33-year-old man from Vermont South face the charge of unlawful possession of money.

Both men have been remanded in custody after making a brief appearance in court.

Police have not released any further details, but Detective Inspector Shaun Miller from Serious and Organised Crime said his squad targeted meth dealers in the community.

The state manager of the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission in Western Australia, Doug Miller said the arrests were a strong example of cross-border cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

Both men are due to appear in a Perth court again on August 30.
