Police seek witnesses to Mawson robbery

Police are looking for witnesses and dash-cam footage following a robbery in Mawson on Wednesday morning.

In a statement, ACT Policing said a man dressed in black stole a handbag from a parked vehicle about 11.35am.

The man is said to have opened the passenger door while an elderly person was in the driver's seat.

He then ran to a parked car, a stolen blue 2013 Subaru Forester with Queensland registration plates 898TOO, and began to drive towards Mawson Place.

Police said a man who saw the robbery chased the stolen car, and tried to open the driver's door at the intersection of Heard Street and Mawson Street.

Their attempt was not successful, and the vehicle sped off.

Police recovered the stolen Subaru Forester on Thursday, and officers would like to speak to the man who attempted to stop the offender from getting away.

They would also like to hear from any witnesses or people who have dash-cam or CCTV footage from around the time of the incident.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website, quoting reference 6642672. Information can be provided anonymously.
