The partner of a woman who was found dead in her North Parramatta apartment yesterday has been charged with murder.

WARNING: This story includes details some readers may find distressing.

Meraj Zafar, 20, has been refused bail and will appear in Bankstown Local Court today.

His 19-year-old partner, Arnima Hayat, was found dead in a bath full of acid at her unit on Pennant Hills Road just after 4:30pm.

Police went to the unit after a relative raised concerns about the woman's welfare.

When they arrived, officers forced their way in but had to retreat after it became clear there were chemicals inside the home.

Specialist HAZMAT officers from Fire and Rescue NSW were then called and spent several hours examining the scene.

Superintendent Julie Boon said the scene was "very challenging" for officers.

Meraj Zafar was arrested after handing himself into police following a public appeal for information.

A truck found in Greenacre has been seized for forensic examination as police enquiries continue.

Police are asking anyone who saw or heard anything near the crime scene to come forward.

A post-mortem examination on the woman is expected to be completed today.
