South Australia Police are investigating after a body was found in a car submerged in water at Hindmarsh Island on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

A member of the public called police after spotting the car in the water near Tolarno Drive at about 1.30pm yesterday.

Police divers searched the water and found the body of a 52-year-old man from Pooraka inside the submerged car.

In a statement, SA Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police are asking anyone with information that might assist their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.

The man's death brings the state's road toll to 22, compared to six at the same time last year.
