Police seek identity of wrong way driver

ACT Policing is chasing the identity of a driver who was seen travelling down the Tuggeranong Parkway on the wrong side of the road last night.

Police said they were aware of a video on social media which shows a vehicle heading north in the southbound lanes of the parkway, near the Cotter Road exit shortly after midnight.

ACT Policing Traffic Superintendent Corey Helden said it was a reminder for all drivers to pay attention at all times.

"Whenever you're behind the wheel, you need to be aware of what you're doing, but also of what's happening on the road around you," he said.

"A head on collision between two cars at highway speed will often result in serious injury or death."

Canberran Thanh Vu was driving on the Tuggeranong Parkway when the incident happened, said the other car came out of nowhere.

"My heart skipped a beat," Mr Vu told The Canberra Times.

"There were two cars in front of me and a bus behind me as well.

"We all had high beamed [the driver], but the driver just kept driving past."

Mr Vu said the other driver then continued to drive down the wrong side of the road.

"I just went home, but hopefully but no accidents happened to that car," he said.

Police have asked the driver of the car, or witnesses to the incident, including those who captured additional dash-cam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
