Police seek fifth bail extension for Tory MP arrested on suspicion of rape a year ago

Police are seeking another extension to the bail of a Tory MP arrested on suspicion of rape more than a year ago, the Met confirmed on Monday.

The politician, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was detained by officers in May 2022 over allegations of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in public office.

He has since been bailed four times and officers said they are now seeking a fifth extension.

The complaint, first made in January 2020, relates to alleged sexual offences committed in London between 2002 and 2009.

A Met spokesman said: "An investigation is ongoing, led by officers from Central Specialist Crime.

"A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in public office.

"He was taken into custody and has since been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in mid-May 2023; an extension to his bail is being sought."

The Conservative Chief Whip has asked that the MP in question not to attend the Parliamentary Estate while the police probe is ongoing.

The party said it will not be commenting further until the investigation is complete.
