Police searching property in Portishead following earlier explosion near Weston-super-Mare

Police are searching a property in Portishead which they have said is 'directly linked' to an explosion in Worle in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, May 14).

Avon and Somerset Constabulary have confirmed this evening they are carrying out a precautionary search of a property in the Forth Avenue area which is 'directly linked to this morning's incident', following the arrest of two men aged 20 and 21 on suspicion of causing an explosion.

A spokesperson for the force has stated that there is not believed to be any risk posed to the wider public, and confirmed they are continuing to work alongside fellow emergency services and the army's Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit. 

Police were alerted at around 4.30am this morning after members of the public heard two loud bangs in the Appletree Court area. The EOD unit located a small device in a lane in the Appletree Court area, however confirmed it posed no threat to the public.

The lane was closed whilst the unit investigated, however it has since been reopened to the public.

The incident is not being treated as terrorism or domestic terrorism-related.

DI Rich Horsfall, investigating officer, said: “We appreciate that there has been a lot of disruption and inconvenience for those living in some of our North Somerset communities today and I’d like to thank people for their continuing support.

“Our investigation is progressing and two people remain under arrest.

“We’ll continue to make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum. Our priority will always be public safety and with that in mind, we have to take precautionary measures when dealing with investigations such as this one.”

A police spokesperson has also confirmed that reassurance patrols will continue to be carried out in the area this evening.
