Police searching for suspected victim of modern day slavery after cannabis farm raid

Officers are 'seriously concerned' about the welfare of a suspected victim of modern day slavery believed to have been living at an address where a cannabis farm was found.

The man, believed to be of East Asian origin, was understood to be living at the home on Cunliffe Street in Edgeley.

Acting on intelligence from the community, police raided the home under Section 17 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, due to the 'immediate concern for the occupant'.

Officers searched the home and found a cannabis farm, growing around 100 plants in the loft space.

"There were also clear signs that other rooms were being prepared to expand the production within the address.

"All of the cannabis plants were seized and removed from the address", a post on the GMP Stockport Facebook page said on Monday.

Nobody was found inside the property and no arrests have been made.

But police believe that the man who was living there left in a hurry shortly before they arrived at the scene.

"There were serious concerns for the welfare of the occupant inside the address who officers suspect to be a victim of modern day slavery and being criminally exploited by others", the post said.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact police quoting log number 1864-02082020.
