Police say the victim sustained a number of injuries including a split lip, a bloodied nose and a broken cheekbone.

An investigation into the incident was launched and police have now released an image of a man they would like to trace.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police urged members of the public to come forward with any information they may have that may help with the investigation.

A spokesperson for the force said: "The man was in the area at the time of the incident and may have information that could assist police with the investigation.

"The man, or anyone who knows him is asked to contact police using the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of the website, or by calling 101 quoting log 111 220821."
