Police have arrested a man on suspicion of neglect after reports that he tried to sell a baby to a member of the public. The incident is believed to have happened just after 2.30pm on Sunday. The man was reported to have approached a member of the public on Deansgate in Manchester city centre and offered to sell him the baby.

A picture released earlier by police shows the man in a the doorway of a betting shop holding a pram with one hand.

Officers said a three-month-old baby girl was found safe and well and that the 28-year-old man was being held for questioning.

DI Liam Boden of Greater Manchester police said: “We would like to thank members of the public and the media for their assistance in publicising the appeal earlier today. We have now arrested a man on suspicion of child neglect and will be questioning him in relation to the incident as we try to establish the full circumstances.”
