Police believe the girl was assaulted near her home in the Northern Territory town of Tennant Creek.  (ABC Alice Springs: Samantha Jonscher)

Police are investigating an incident in Tennant Creek where a man is believed to have lured a young child away from her home, before indecently assaulting her.

Between 7.30 and 8pm last night, police said the unknown man started talking to the child in her front yard before leading her to a nearby abandoned vehicle.

Police believe the man indecently assaulted the girl in the car.

The girl's exact age is unclear, but the ABC understands she is under the age of 10.

The child's family reported the incident to police, who went to the location involved and declared it a crime scene.

Detectives from the Regional Crime Division are calling for assistance from the public to find the offender, who is described as being of Aboriginal appearance with a tall slim build, curly hair and aged in his 20s.

According to police the man was wearing a red shirt at the time.

Anyone who believes they may have seen the man or who has CCTV footage from within the vicinity of Whippet Street is urged to contact police on 131 444.
