Police are searching for an armed gang who were spotted in West Denton.
Officers were called to the area near to McDonald's on Tuesday evening after a report that a number of young men had been seen chasing a boy with weapons including machetes and a hammer.
When officers arrived at the scene, the group had disappeared but the force is now attempting to identify them.
Nobody has come forward to say they were attacked but officers are asking for anyone with information to contact them.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 6.55pm on Tuesday police received a report that a number of males were armed with weapons near to the McDonalds on West Denton Way.
"Officers attended but the group had left the area. Nobody has contacted police to say they have been threatened or attacked by the group and nobody is believed to have been injured.
"Inquiries to identify those involved are ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police on 101 quoting log 952 28/01/20."
