Police searching for driver after car is pulled from the River Wear in Sunderland

A search is under way for the driver of a car which was pulled from the River Wear.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near the Queen Alexandra Bridge, on Thursday morning after reports of a vehicle in the water.

Police say they do not believe anyone was injured but an investigation has been launched to find the driver.

The vehicle was recovered from the river on Friday morning by Northumbria Police's Marine Unit.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Shortly after 8.15am on Thursday we received a report of a car in the River Wear, near the Queen Alexandra Bridge.

“Emergency services attended the scene, alongside specialist officers from our Marine Unit, who carried out searches of the nearby area.

“Inquiries to trace the driver of the vehicle and determine how it came to be in the water are ongoing, but it is not believed anyone was injured and the vehicle was recovered earlier on Friday.
