Newcastle Police conducted an extensive search of the waters at Newcastle Beach Wednesday night after a witness contacted emergency services believing they may have seen someone struggling in the water.

Officers from Newcastle City Police district, with NSW Ambulance on scene, conducted a thorough search of the beach and called in a helicopter to assist the search over the water, but said they did not find anyone struggling or in danger.

A spokesperson for Newcastle Police said they have not received any further reports of a missing person, but have urged anyone who may have been in the water at or around dusk Wednesday evening, or who may know of someone missing, to come forward immediately.

Police and emergency services arrived on Newcastle Beach around 6.20pm. Anyone with information in relation to the incident has been urged to contact Newcastle Police.
