Police search for mother after newborn baby abandoned in London park

Police are trying to trace the mother of a newborn baby who was abandoned in an east London park.

The child was discovered early on Sunday in Plaistow Park, "carefully" wrapped in a white blanket. Police officers and an ambulance were called and the infant was taken to hospital, where it is receiving care.

The baby is being called Harry by medical staff.

Officers say they are concerned about the welfare of the child's mother and have appealed for her to come forward.

In a direct appeal, Detective Jim Foley of the Metropolitan Police said: "We are growing increasingly concerned for your welfare and I would urge you to make contact with us or your local hospital or GP surgery.

"It is really important that we know you are safe."

Detectives are also asking members of the public with any information about the baby to come forward. They can contact police on 020 8217 6498 or via 101.
