Police search for man who allegedly stole two inoperable rifles from Queensland Maritime Museum

Police are looking for a man seen carrying two rifles from a Brisbane museum.

CCTV footage shows the man carrying two large inoperable rifles wrapped in a cloth over his shoulder.

Police said the items were stolen from the Queensland Maritime Museum around 12pm on March 26.

The man was last seen dressed in black shorts and a T-shirt, travelling on foot along Little Dock Street in South Brisbane.

Rifles have historical significance

Captain Kasper Kuiper, chairman for Queensland Maritime Museum, said the stolen rifles had the combined value of around $12,000.

He said they were part of a collection 12 from the Diamantina warship used in World War II.

"I find it petty that they [stole the rifles], because it is historical ship," Captain Kuiper said.

"It is one of the last ones."

The Diamantina was commissioned in 1945 and was the ship where the Japanese signed surrender documents at the end of the war.

Captain Kuiper said he hoped the rifles will be returned to the museum soon.

"It's put a lot of stress on to the Maritime Museum," he said.

Anyone who recognises the man, or who has relevant CCTV or dashcam vision, is urged to contact police.
