Police find body of four-wheel driver swept away in Aberfeldy River, near Sullivans Track

Police divers have found the body of a 66-year-old Mirboo North man who was swept away while trying to cross a river in Victoria's east.

Police said search and rescue divers found the man inside his submerged vehicle this morning.

The man and his friend were four-wheel driving on Sullivans Track, north of Walhalla, at about 1:30pm when the man attempted to cross the Aberfeldy River.

Police say it appears the vehicle was inundated when it dropped into a deep section of the river.

Police also responded to several other incidents where people were four-wheel driving or riding motorbikes in wet conditions.

"A group of motorbike riders were up near Dargo riding through the bush — in those conditions it wasn't overly smart," Superintendent Mark Edwards said.

"Luckily, these riders managed to get out safely, but not without a real scare.

"I question some of the decision-making, when we're having these sort of rains and we've got these floods.

"People are making some choices that are not only putting themselves at great risk but they're putting other people at risk too — the people that rally together to go rescue these people."

'Easy to get caught out'

The Aberfeldy was not one of the rivers authorities were concerned might flood in the weekend's wild weather.

But the nearest river gauge shows the river was at one metre at the time — about four times its usual level.

Gippsland Four-Wheel Drive Club president Shane Howells says the river crossings in the area can be dangerous when river level is up.

"It's very easy to get caught out when you're used to driving through those crossings," he said.

"Even if you know [the crossing] well enough to go through the shallow section, that would be very deep.
