Police search bushland for body of Quanne Diec

The man accused of murdering missing Sydney schoolgirl Quanne Diec has led detectives to where he allegedly buried her body.

Vinzent Tarantino, who is also known as Victor Gerada, took detectives to an area of bushland south of Appin Road at Bulli Tops, south of Sydney, on Wednesday.

NSW Police Superintendent Scott Whyte said the location was not easy to search.

"This operation is with a view of hopefully locating the body of Quanne Diec," he said.

"Currently there is a 49-year old male assisting police with our inquiries.

"He has shown us a number of locations, all of which are very thick dense bushland."

The search has been made harder by a storm which struck during the afternoon. Heavy fog has shrouded the search area, which is in drinking water catchment land.

Tarantino was charged over the murder and kidnapping of Quanne Diec when he handed himself in to police on Sunday.

The 12-year-old was abducted just a few hundred metres from her Granville home in July 1998.

She was last seen walking to school.

"Obviously we're dealing with an issue that's 18 years old and there's been significant environmental factors that obviously impact our ability to search these areas," Superintendent Whyte said.

"It's going to be a large scale operation to search the area that's been identified.

"At this stage we're going to go away, assess the information and determine the most appropriate location [to continue the search]."

There has been no trace of the missing girl, despite a major police investigation and the offer of a cash reward.

Tarantino lived several hundred metres from the Diec family home at the time and police will allege he knew the missing girl's movements and deliberately targeted her.
