Police Scotland yet to take action against under-fire public transport boss

Police have still not taken action against retiring public transport boss Gordon Maclennan – a month after he was caught driving an illegal cloned car.

He was suspended before retiring as SPT’s £153,000-a-year chief executive after the Sunday Mail revealed he drove a VW Passat at his holiday home with the same registration as an almost identical Passat parked at his office in Glasgow.

Cloning is often used to commit offences associated with another car. It is also used to avoid road tax, insurance and MOT costs.

We published pictures of Maclennan, 72, driving a cloned car on the Isle of Lewis with his serving police officer son Stuart in the passenger seat.

Police Scotland initally failed to launch an investigation, insisting they could only do so if a third party made a complaint.

After public outrage, a probe was launched but since then there appears to have been no progress, with a force spokesman stating only that “inquiries are ongoing”.

Tory MSP Russell Findlay said: “The law should be applied consistently to everyone.”

Labour MSP Monica Lennon wrote to Chief Constable Iain Livingstone but has yet to receive a proper response.

Police Scotland said: “A response will be sent in due course.”
