Police Scotland trolled after advising men about sexual violence on International Men's Day

Police Scotland has come under fire after posting on social media advising men on sexual violence on International Men’s Day.

People lined up to register their disapproval after the police shared a post on Facebook this afternoon.

The post read: “On International Men’s Day, That Guy Scotland are sharing ways that all men can make a difference when it comes to reducing sexual violence,” and then went onto list five ways men can make a difference.

They included: Challenging your own and others attitudes, be a role model, create opportunities for discussion and never to dismiss small behaviours.

However, some frustrated members of the public felt that is was disrespectful to be raising this issue on International Men’s Day, rather than focusing on things like male suicide.

One woman agreed and said: “As a daughter, wife, sister and mother to three sons, I appreciate the message you’re trying to get across here Police Scotland and you are not wrong.

"However, I’d like to see a more supportive post to men today. It’s already been pointed out that men are more likely to commit suicide and in the midst of the global picture right now I really think that this subject could have waited for another day.”

Another woman added: “I thought the international men’s days were about support? This post does not read like that. Such a shame when you had a chance to highlight crimes against men & the support available to them you choose to post this.”

However, not everyone agreed with these sentiments and some called on men to face up to the reality.

One woman said: “Important to note this post doesn’t say anything negative about men, just gives tips on how to be a good man in society. But you all got offended by that and I think that speaks volumes.”

The woman then received over 30 replies to her post but she remained firm and asked for more introspection from people.

She replied: “Literally nothing negative about the post. And if you think there is, if you’re triggered by a post saying you should speak up against violence and abuse, I suggest you ask yourself why.”
