Police Scotland spent £1.4m on doomed Rangers FC fraud probe with damages paid to Whitehouse and Clark

Police Scotland have spent at least £1.4m investigating the doomed fraud probe into the sale of Rangers FC.

Chief Constable Iain Livingstone has revealed that former administrator David Whitehouse has been paid more than £310,00 in damages and legal costs by the force.

His colleague Paul Clark received up to £75,000 and a sum of cash towards paying his lawyer fees after the men were wrongly arrested in 2014.

Businessmen David Whitehouse and Paul Clark were appointed administrators at Rangers FC in 2012 (PA)

The Crown Office has since found that the prosecution of the duo was “malicious” while Lord Advocate James Wolffe QC said the case was “a very serious failure” in the prosecution system.

Scotland’s police chief revealed the cash figures in a letter to MSPs after appearing in front of a Holyrood committee last month.

He estimated that the cost of the “core team” on Operation Iona was £1m in salary payments over a three year period.

He also identified £400,000 in extra costs which included travel expenses.

Mr Livingstone said lessons had been learned from the investigation and the police would cooperate fully with a judge-led inquiry which is due to take place in the future.

He added: “Policing deals with challenging and complex matters, at all times with the aim of improving the lives of the public.

"Where we do not get everything right, reparations are dealt with on a case-by-case basis and with a view to securing fairness and best value for the public purse."
