Police Scotland on the hunt for volunteer officers to patrol Edinburgh

Police Scotland have launched a nationwide campaign to recruit Special Constables - including here in Edinburgh.

The special constabulary is a part-time volunteer body that consists of officers whose powers are identical to regular police officers.

Special Constables work in their spare time, undertaking the same duties as police officers, which include patrolling the streets, policing football matches and attending road traffic accidents.

The drive is in response to dwindling volunteer numbers, which dropped by just over 60% since 2013, according to the BBC.

Can I become a Special Constable?

While you only need to work 96 hours per year or a few hours a week as a Special Constable, other requirements aren't so flexible.

You must be:

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Your Body Mass Index should be between 18 – 30
  • You must not have an occupation or business interest which will be considered a conflict of interest

  • You must meet the mandatory national eyesight standard

  • Only applications from British citizens, EU/EEA nationals, Commonwealth citizens, or foreign nationals with indefinite leave to remain in the UK will be accepted

You can find more information nd apply on Police Scotland's website here.
