Police Scotland officers make Queen's New Year Honours list for 2020

Four officers from Police Scotland have been included in the Queen's New Year Honours list for 2020.

Assistant Chief Constable Gillian MacDonald, who led on Major Crime and Public Protection, and Detective Chief Superintendent Gerry McLean, who was head of Organised Crime and Counter-Terrorism at Police Scotland, have been awarded the Queen's Police Medal (QPM).

McLean is now is now Head of Investigations for Scotland and Northern Ireland for the National Crime Agency.

Police Sergeant Robert Fowler, who served as a Counter Terrorism Strategy Liaison Officer within Highland and Islands Division but has since retired, has received an MBE for services to Law and Order.

Police Inspector Graham Miller, who also retired this year, has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to Law and Order. He was based within Public Order team at Jackton and specialised in the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear aspect of the team's work.

Chief Constable Iain Livingstone QPM said: "The four officers are very deserving recipients of these honours, having made significant contributions to policing throughout their careers.

"I have no doubt everyone in the organisation will join with me in extending our sincere congratulations to them."

Household names from the worlds of showbiz, sport and politics have been recognised alongside a glittering array of figures from the arts, sciences and charity.

British-born Australian songstress Olivia Newton-John is made a dame for services to charity, cancer research and entertainment, while critically acclaimed director Sam Mendes gets a knighthood for his contribution to drama.

Culinary stars Ainsley Harriott and Nadiya Hussain, who rose to fame by winning the 2015 series of The Great British Bake Off, receive MBEs, while chef and author Nigel Slater gets an OBE for services to cookery and literature.

Controversially, Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith, the architect of the Universal Credit system, is also being knighted alongside colleague Bob Neill.
