Police Scotland issue E-scooter present warning this Christmas

Police Scotland have issued a warning to any parents or individuals planning on buying an e-scooter this Christmas to be aware of the rules around where they can be used.

Officers have stated that using an E-scooter in public spaces in Scotland is illegal and this includes on pavements as well as roads across the capital.

They add that they are also not permitted for use in public parks, town centres or promenades like those found at Silverknowes and Portobello beach.

It is understood that the electric vehicles can only be used on privately owned spaces, with the land or property owner’s permission.

Police say that E-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and are treated the same as other motor vehicles as they are subject to the same legal requirements like insurance, a valid driving licence and compliance with manufacturing and use requirements.

As a result Police Scotland are making sure that Scottish residents know the laws and implications before they purchase an E-scooter this Christmas.

Superintendent Simon Bradshaw, deputy head of road policing, said: “We understand that e-scooters are a tempting option for Christmas presents this year. It is important however, to make it clear, these are not toys and they are illegal to use in public. If an e-scooter is on your Christmas wish list, make sure you know how and where to use them safely."

E-scooters have become a popular way for people to travel around urban centres whilst also playing a part in saving the planet but this announcement by Police Scotland should make people think twice before they purchase one for travel in Edinburgh.
