Police Scotland is looking to recruit more women as officers in a bid to tackle ‘under-representation’.
The force will be holding an online recruitment event next month which will give women an insight into what the job entails.
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed that by March 31 last year, just 5,709 women were employed as officers by Police Scotland.
The figure is a stark contrast to the 11,984 male officers that work for the force.
Police Scotland is now seeking to close the gap as it now believes that women are currently “ under-represented ”.
It is hoped that the 90 minute event will inspire more women to feel ‘inspired’ to take up a new career in policing.
Figures also released by Police Scotland also revealed that just one percent of police officers working with the force is of an ethnic minority background.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland would like to encourage more women to consider becoming a police officer in Scotland.
“We are hosting a 90 minute online recruitment event. The event is aimed at women, to provide an insight into the role of a police officer/special constable.
“You will learn about the recruitment process, the training involved and the endless opportunities which would be available to you as your embark on this journey.
“Women are currently under-represented in the police and it is hoped the event will inspire you to consider a career in policing.”
